First staged in 1987, The Steamie has become an iconic part of the Scottish Drama scene, held in great affection by theatre goers for over three decades and still proving as popular as ever.
Set on Hogmanay in the 1950’s, four working class women meet in the Steamie to do the last laundry of the year. As is customary on Hogmanay, their talk is a blend of reminiscing and nostalgia for things past; and their hopes and dreams of the future. Along with some sharp and hilarious commentary on their role as women at this time’ and the role and behaviour of their menfolk! Andy, the only male in the cast, graphically and humorously illustrates this gender divide.
